The MICE Ladies discover the capital of Hygge
Under the themes “Cozy, Conscious, Curious” we met from December 4th to 6th, 2024 to experience the vibrant capital of Denmark with a wonderful MICE Ladies group – all event planners from Germany. During three unforgettable days, Copenhagen showed us why it is a pioneer in the areas of sustainability, design and event planning.
The mix of innovative concepts, sustainable projects, hotels and locations and the typical Danish cosiness not only gave us goosebumps, but also provided us with plenty of practical inspiration for our own projects.
What did we take away with us? A head full of ideas, a heart full of impressions and lots of new favorite places for meetings, incentives and events. The finest culinary experiences. Wonderful, inspiring encounters and conversations. And of course: lots of fun!
Day 1: Hygge, history and heavenly cuisine
After our arrival at the charming Hotel Grand Joanne in Vesterbro, we were greeted with a warm welcome lunch. The hotel’s own restaurant, Joanne’s, not only offered delicious dishes, but quickly became the place for the first exciting conversations and ideas. Linda Faust, Head of Commercial, then took us on a personal tour of the hotel and revealed how the spirit of the fictional “Grand Joanne” shapes every corner of the house – a story that we love as event planners.

In an exciting educational session with fine pastries and delicious tea in the glass pavilion of the Grand Joanne, we learned everything there was to know about Copenhagen’s innovative sustainability strategy. The Copenhagen Convention Bureau offered us valuable insights into their programs and approaches that make Copenhagen a pioneering city in terms of sustainability. The beautiful pavilion in the hotel’s courtyard provided the ideal setting to learn more about Copenhagen’s pioneering projects and the commitment of the Convention Bureau in a relaxed atmosphere.

In the afternoon we discovered Copenhagen from its hyggelig side. On a special kind of ‘hygge’ city tour, on foot with the great and funny expert Tanya from Copenhagen This Way, we were able to experience the vibrant metropolis of Copenhagen in all its winter beauty. Our tour took us through the old streets and to some of the most important sights in the old town and was a journey full of inspiration, Scandinavian flair and unforgettable moments that thrilled us all. The Danish capital showed us impressively why it is one of the most exciting destinations for MICE professionals.

The first surprise for our ladies: a rickshaw ride through pre-Christmas Copenhagen. Riding through Copenhagen in a rickshaw is an experience that appeals to all the senses. We rolled comfortably, warmly wrapped up, through the charming streets, past colorful house facades, while the wind blew over the scent of fresh pastries and the sea. Our destination: the picturesque district by the canal. Once there, the true soul of Copenhagen was revealed. The narrow waterways, framed by historic buildings and lively cafés, reflected the city’s unique attitude to life. The combination of lively big city flair and the relaxed, hygge atmosphere made this place unforgettable.
A rickshaw ride is not only sustainable, but also the perfect way to experience the heart of Copenhagen from a new perspective. Simply magical!

The crowning conclusion of the day was dinner at the Norrlyst i Tårnet restaurant – high up in one of the towers of Danish parliament, Christiansborg Palace. With a view of illuminated Copenhagen, we enjoyed exquisite food and thought: What a start!

Day 2: Sustainability and creative event locations
Our second day started with a highlight: a sustainability panel and subsequent sustainability session in small groups at Villa Copenhagen. This 5-star hotel impressed us with its concept of “Conscious Luxury” – a perfect balance of elegance and environmentally conscious thinking. Three local MICE experts – the decoration and furniture rental company CPH Lounge, the DMC Idéa Nordic and Villa Copenhagen as well as the Copenhagen Convention Bureau impressively demonstrated along the event value chain how events can be planned sustainably without sacrificing creativity, experience and luxury. They shared their best practices and we eagerly noted down ideas for our own sustainable event concepts.

After a delicious lunch at the Lola restaurant in Christianshavn, we went to a very impressive location: CopenHill, a futuristic building and an artificial mountain that serves as a waste incineration plant and ski slope at the same time. This creative project impressively shows how sustainability, sport and design can go hand in hand.

Another highlight awaited us in the afternoon: HotTub Copenhagen. We relaxed in cozy outdoor whirlpools with a sea view, enjoyed a fine glass of champagne and inspiring conversations, while the bravest of us dared to jump into the ice cold water tub. Our pictures speak volumes – pure relaxation and lots of laughter!

In the evening, we were enchanted by the festively lit Tivoli Gardens, one of the oldest amusement parks in the world. Before dinner at the Kilden I Haven restaurant we learned from Lars Adler B2B Manger at Tivoli Garden how Tivoli manages to combine tradition and sustainability – a concept that inspired us all. The dinner itself was a culinary masterpiece, perfectly rounded off by the stories of Dorthe Juhl Østergaard, owner of the LOCA restaurants and Head of Sustainability, about the “New Nordic Cuisine”.
The crowning glory of the evening was a lively round of “Pakkespil”, in which we were able to loot little treasures from Copenhagen and Denmark. With lots of laughter and constant back and forth, the gifts were exchanged, hotly contested packages were stolen and passed from one player to the next. The dynamics of the game increased with each round, and the atmosphere was filled with lively joy and cheerful chaos. Time pressure and constantly changing owners made the whole thing a hilarious and lively spectacle, where no one knew which Danish souvenir they would actually keep at the end.

Day 3: Creativity, teamwork and a hyggelig farewell in style
The last day was all about getting creative ourselves. At a Danish baking course at CPH Cooking Class in a hyggelig Copenhagen apartment in the Nyhavn district, which has been converted into a wonderful place for team-oriented cooking courses with a professional kitchen, we learned how to conjure up the famous Danish pastries – including some funny and delicious mishaps. Our “Kanelsnurrer” (cardamom rolls) and “Kardemommesnegle” (coriander rolls) tasted excellent! The perfect start to our last day, which really demanded everything from us in small groups!

Then it was time to get out on the water! With Hey Captain we discovered Copenhagen in a creative way from the boat, passing houseboats and hidden corners of the city that are best discovered on the water! Hey Captain is a small company with the mission of promoting social interaction during an exciting and informative tour and combining this with a team building experience – ideal for bringing a group together in a creative and experience-oriented way! Despite the winter cold, we enjoyed the view of the city from new perspectives, learned exciting things about each other and had a lot of fun, also thanks to the delicious Glögg!

At the end of the trip, lunch awaited us in the cozy Cap Horn restaurant. The restaurant in the heart of Copenhagen’s picturesque Nyhavn exudes the charm of centuries past, when the harbor was still a meeting place for sailors and adventurers. With its historic ambience and organically inspired cuisine, it is reminiscent of the rough romance of seafaring that once shaped the history of this city. Surrounded by the colorful houses and the charm of the harbor, we ended the trip with traditional dishes and a final hyggelig moment.

Our conclusion: Copenhagen – a city that inspires!
This trip was more than just a look behind the scenes of Copenhagen’s MICE scene. It was an experience that showed us how event planning gets even better with sustainability, creativity and community.
Every participant returned with fresh ideas, contacts and a big smile – and we all agree: Copenhagen is worth a trip, and not just in winter.
Thank you, Copenhagen – see you next time!
